State Veterinarian’s Office solicits input on veterinary shortage areas for VMLRP

The State Veterinarian’s Office is soliciting input to assist in identifying rural areas in Colorado facing veterinarian shortages.

Veterinary Medical Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) awardees commit to providing at least three years of food animal veterinary services in a designated veterinary shortage area in return for payments of up to $25,000 of student loan debt per year with a maximum of $75,000 for a three-year contract. Click here to learn more about the VMLRP and other veterinary loan repayment programs.

Your input will help the State Veterinarian’s Office establish which areas of Colorado may be designated as veterinary shortage areas for the VMLRP.

Shortage situations are geographical areas that have a shortage of veterinarians practicing in the following areas: Food animal medicine, public health, and epidemiology and food safety.

Information or input that would be helpful in the shortage area decision-making process:

1. Geographic areas where a veterinary shortage situation exists:

  • Why should this area be considered a veterinary shortage situation?
  • Consequences of not securing/retaining a veterinarian in this area
  • Results of past recruiting efforts

2. Recent or potential hires that may qualify for the VMLRP

Please provide your input to the State Veterinarian’s Office by November 1 to:
