Obituary

Edward Louis Umlauf, DVM, 74, of Windsor, Colorado passed peacefully on Christmas Eve with family at his side.

Dr. Umlauf, affectionately known as “Dr. Ed” grew up in a German pocket of Pennsylvania to Lieutenant Colonel Harry “Jake” Umlauf, MD and his mother Beatrice “Bea” Umlauf.  A precocious and curious boy who attained fast verbal and motor skills that paid off both in the formative years, and later in life through study and dedication in the field of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Umlauf lived up to the meaning of his name in nature and spirit: a protector.  With a boisterous personality and a penchant for discipline, these attributes helped shape a life of service to those he cherished. A graduate of Colorado State University in the physical sciences (’66), earned Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (’74) and post doctorate pursuit and orthopedic specialty thereafter. Dr. Umlauf logged (13) years of educational and didactic training before he started his practice in Fort Collins, Colorado and continued throughout the state.

During his doctoral study, he had an influential professor that led him to connect with his Christian heritage and was forever changed. His ethos was to bring others to walk in the light of the lord. He held a significant presence both in stature and action. Those who knew him best felt seen, supported and loved as he exuded passion to protect.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Karla, his first wife Michelle, children Zachary MBA, Lyndsey RN, and Jesse. His brother Theo, sisters Barbara PHD, Gretchen, MS.  His legacy will continue through his grandchildren and all those he helped along the way.

In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the MAXFUND, a nonprofit animal services organization, to help continue his mission to the public.

Dr. Umlauf reminded us life is to be lived but eternity is forever. To take our time here seriously and with purpose. To laugh, to love and always to serve.
