2026 will be here before we know it, and it’s a license renewal year for Colorado veterinarians!
As you prepare, take note of an important new continuing education (CE) requirement now in effect under Colorado law.
All Colorado-licensed veterinarians must complete 2 hours of CE on topics related to delegation and supervision each licensing period, beginning with the October 2026 renewal. This is in addition to the previous two required CE topics: substance use prevention training and jurisprudence CE.
Why this change?
In May 2024, the Veterinary Technician Scope of Practice bill (HB24-1047) was signed into law, improving how veterinary teams work together. The bill provides veterinary professionals with greater clarity around the ability and legality of delegating a wide range of tasks, including prescription administration, animal husbandry, and shelter work, to trained and competent veterinary personnel under clearly defined levels of supervision.
The bill also established a new education requirement: veterinarians must complete two hours of CE each licensing period on delegation and the supervision of veterinary technicians, veterinary technician specialists, and other personnel.
What you need to know
- Required hours: 2 hours of CE on delegation and supervision per licensing period (beginning with 2026 renewals). These hours are part of the 32 total hours of CE needed.
- Who it applies to: All Colorado-licensed veterinarians
- Purpose: To help veterinarians strengthen their delegation skills and effectively utilize their veterinary teams

What about the other Colorado-required CE topics?
Colorado also requires veterinarians to complete 2 hours of jurisprudence CE and 1 hour of substance use prevention training CE each licensing period.
One of the two hours for the jurisprudence CE will cover the Veterinary Technician Scope of Practice (HB24-1047). This course offers a deeper dive into the law and is the perfect companion to Optimizing Delegation for Veterinary Teams — together, they provide both the legal framework and practical application for using your veterinary team to its fullest potential.
CVMA offers courses meeting the state requirements, and these courses are approved by the Colorado State Board of Veterinary Medicine. All courses will be available starting November 1, 2025, and free to 2026 members.
