The Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) is excited to share significant updates on the legislative bills we’ve been following, with special thanks to our dedicated members who have played a crucial role in the process.
HB25-1285 Advances to the Senate
Thanks to the ongoing support from CVMA members, HB25-1285 has made notable progress in the state legislature. Over the past few weeks, CVMA called on our members to help show our support of this bill by reaching out to State Representatives. This week, the bill passed 50-15 following 3rd reading in the House and includes new amendments. Efforts by our members calling and emailing Representatives truly make a difference – thank you!
Next, HB25-1285 will be introduced in the Senate and CVMA is committed to continuing this momentum. We will soon be calling on our members again to help with outreach to State Senators as the bill moves forward. Please stay tuned for more details on how you can get involved in advocating for this important piece of legislation. We encourage you to update your communication preferences!
The CVMA strongly supports HB25-1285, which aims to provide vital statutory structure and guidance for the State Board of Veterinary Medicine as it sets rules for veterinary professional associates. This bill is a critical step toward ensuring successful implementation of the veterinary professional associate role in Colorado. Download HB25-1285 FAQs
SB25-159: Telehealth Bill Fails to Advance
In other legislative news, SB25-159, a new telehealth bill, has been tabled indefinitely after being considered by the Senate Agriculture Committee. CVMA strongly opposed this bill, as it proposed allowing a Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) to be established without an in-person exam, which would undermine the integrity of veterinary care. We are pleased with this outcome, and we continue to urge veterinary professionals to use safe and effective telehealth practices, which went into effect August 2024.
Looking Ahead
CVMA remains focused on the advancement of bills that align with the best interests of animal health and safety and the veterinary profession. As the legislative session progresses, CVMA will continue to advocate for policies that strengthen the veterinary profession and protect the standards of care in Colorado. We are grateful for the support of our members and look forward to working together as we navigate the remainder of the legislative session.
