The goal of the CVMA's advocacy efforts is to ensure that laws affecting veterinary medicine honor and protect the health of animals as well as the interests of their owners, and that the laws advance the competence, professional integrity, judgment, and wellbeing of the veterinary workforce into the future.
Active Legislation

The 2024 Colorado Legislative session opened January 10, 2024 and closed May 9, 2024. CVMA pledges to keep members updated on the latest news and changes through eVOICE, our app, and on the blog. As always, CVMA will actively monitor and engage with legislation that have the potential to impact the veterinary or animal welfare communities.

Movement

  • November 7, 2024: Proposition 129 has passed by vote of the Colorado public.
  • October 2024: Keep Our Pets Safe encourages all to educate the public on why Prop 129 is a bad idea. Utilize all resources here.
  • September 10, 2024: Ballot Initiative #145 has been announced as Proposition #129 by the Secretary of State and will appear on Colorado voter’s ballots this November.
  • August 2024: Final count and validation for inclusion on the November ballot via the Secretary of State will be available by September 4, 2024
  • July 29, 2024: Proponents have submitted signatures gathered. The Secretary of State is verifying signatures.
  • July 2024: A multi-organization coalition that includes CVMA called KEEP OUR PETS SAFE has launched a public campaign opposing Proposition 129.
Denver Initiative 309

Slaughterhouses Prohibited

Movement

  • September 10, 2024: This initiative will appear on Denver’s November ballot as Initiative 309.
  • Summer 2024: Proponents are gathering signatures needed for this initiative to appear on Denver’s November ballot.

Proposed Ballot title:
Shall the voters of the City and County of Denver adopt an ordinance prohibiting slaughterhouses, and, in connection, beginning January 1, 2026, prohibiting the construction, maintenance, or use of slaughterhouses within the City; and requiring the City to prioritize residents whose employment is affected by the ordinance in workforce training or employment assistance programs.
