A CE requirement for DEA license renewal may be causing Colorado veterinarians some confusion.
Veterinarians in Colorado continue to have questions about a federal CE requirement tied to DEA license renewals—here’s what you need to know.
The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 established a one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all DEA-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This requirement applies to medical practitioners, but does not apply to veterinarians.
Veterinarians completing their initial DEA registration or renewing an existing registration will still encounter a checkbox during the online application process affirming that they have “read and understood” information about the training requirement. According to the DEA, veterinarians should go ahead and check this box in order to proceed with registration, even though the training itself is not required.
For more information, read the AVMA’s guidance here.
Important Reminder: This DEA-related training is separate from CE requirements for your Colorado veterinary license. Colorado-licensed veterinarians must complete CE on substance use prevention as part of each license renewal cycle. CVMA includes this course in all memberships—stay tuned for updates on availability for your next renewal.
