CVMA Welcomes CSU DVM Class of 2030

CVMA Welcomes CSU DVM Class of 2030

On August 20, the future of Colorado’s veterinary community took a major step forward at Colorado State University’s annual Oath and Coating Ceremony. Among the family, friends, faculty, and alumni gathered to celebrate the 173 incoming students, CVMA President Dr. Kayla Henderson held a uniquely meaningful role: administering the Veterinarian’s Oath. Representing the entire profession at this milestone moment, Dr. Henderson officially welcomed the Class of 2030 as they received their first blue coats and entered the field of veterinary medicine.

For Dr. Henderson, the moment represented a full-circle story arc. A CSU CVMBS alumna, rural mixed-animal practice owner, and cattle rancher, she returned to her alma mater as CVMA President to guide the next generation into the profession she serves every day.

While time during the ceremony did not allow for formal podium remarks, Dr. Henderson shared her welcome message directly with the incoming class. This core message being: that professional relationships and community are the bedrock of a successful career—is as vital for seasoned practitioners as it is for brand-new students.

A Relationship That Begins Today

CVMA’s relationship with DVM students doesn’t start at graduation; it begins on day one. All 173 members of the Class of 2030, who officially started their veterinary school journey on August 20, are now honorary CVMA members throughout their four years at CSU. Soon, the class will select a student representative to attend CVMA meetings, providing a direct bridge between the student body and the state association.

By engaging early, CVMA aims to help students see themselves as an active part of the broader Colorado veterinary community long before they step out onto the clinic floor.

Watching the Future Take Shape

For CVMA members, the Oath and Coating Ceremony is a powerful reminder of our profession renewing itself. Very soon, these 173 students will be seeking shadow opportunities, filling externships, and taking on internships in practices across Colorado. Before long, they will be standing alongside us as our full-fledged colleagues.

The Oath and Coating Ceremony marks an extraordinary personal milestone for these students, but it is equally meaningful for our statewide network. CVMA is honored to stand beside the Class of 2030 from their very first steps, ensuring they remain connected, supported, and welcomed into the community they will one day lead.
