A Special Honor: AVMA Advocacy Award Presented to Dr. Karen McCormick at CVMA Member Meeting

CVMA was deeply honored to host a very special moment during our 2025 Member Meeting and Awards Presentation: the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) presented its prestigious Advocacy Award to Colorado veterinarian and state representative, Dr. Karen McCormick.

The AVMA Advocacy Award recognizes extraordinary commitment to advancing veterinary medicine through advocacy at the local, state, and national levels. Having this award presented in front of Colorado veterinarians, friends, and colleagues made the occasion even more meaningful.

Dr. McCormick’s acceptance speech was heartfelt and inspiring. She reflected on the veterinary oath, the guiding promise she made upon entering the profession, as her north star throughout her career. While she expected to rely on that oath in her veterinary practice, she shared that she never anticipated how profoundly it would shape her work as a legislator. In the Colorado State House, she has carried the same dedication to animal welfare, public health, and community service that defined her clinical career.

As both a veterinarian and a public servant, Dr. McCormick exemplifies how the values of our profession extend far beyond the clinic walls. Her service is a testament to the power of veterinary leadership in shaping a healthier, more compassionate society.

CVMA is proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor and grateful that our members were able to witness such a meaningful recognition of one of our own. Congratulations, Dr. McCormick, and thank you for representing Colorado and veterinary medicine with such integrity, passion, and vision.
