Pet Nutrition Alliance

Good nutrition enhances pets’ quality of life and is integral to optimal animal health. Yet, it is something that is often overlooked at routine veterinary visits. Whether a pet is young or old, overweight or underweight, struggling with other health issues or perfectly healthy—every pet should receive a nutritional assessment at every veterinary visit.

The Pet Nutrition Alliance (PNA) was created to help raise awareness about the importance of proper pet nutrition, and the value of nutritional assessments for every pet, every time. When the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) made the decision to develop the AAHA Nutritional Assessment Guidelines for Dogs and Cats, the Association also made the commitment to support the development of educational resources to increase compliance with the guidelines’ recommendations. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) used the AAHA guidelines to develop the WSAVA Global Nutritional Assessment Guidelines. WSAVA has committed to developing tools to support this initiative globally. To promote the importance of nutrition in the health of pets worldwide, the following organizations have been working together on what has now become known as the Pet Nutrition Alliance (PNA):

  • American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition
  • American Animal Hospital Association
  • American Veterinary Medical Association
  • American College of Veterinary Nutrition
  • American Society of Veterinary Medical Association Executives
  • Canadian Veterinary Medical Association
  • National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America
  • World Small Animal Veterinary Association
